Memorial Day 2026: The Bravest Boehme

Today is Memorial Day in America’s 250th year as a nation. Over one million men and women have given their lives defending the USA in thirteen major wars. Another four million died due to complications after battle.

My Uncle Dick (Boehme) gave his life for our country in flight combat–just seven months before WWII ended.

I can’t wait to meet him in heaven.

Six months ago, my brother gave me Dick’s silver star, some pictures, and his “Flight Record” book which he’d kept for many years. I created a special memorial shelf for them in my library. The meticulous “Flight Record” is the centerpiece, and contains his last entry–two days before his death.

I reprint Uncle Dick’s story each Memorial Day to honor his sacrifice.

He was the bravest Boehme.

Today is Memorial Day in the U.S. Over one million men and women gave their lives defending the our country in twelve major wars. Another four million died due to complications after battle.

This afternoon I will accompany my wife and mother to our local cemetery and placed flowers on the headstones of loved ones. Freedom is not free–it’s very costly. And we’re losing it in America due to our sins and apathy.

The person I think about most on Memorial Day is my Uncle Dick whom I’ll have the privilege of meeting in heaven. He died near the end of WWII in 1945.

Memorial Day 2022: The Bravest Boehme

My 89-year old mom and I will visit Sunset Lane today–our hometown cemetery–to honor loved ones on Memorial Day. The scenic property overlooking Sinclair Inlet will be bedecked with 200 American flags honoring those who fought for our freedom.

We will walk the grounds and place home-grown flowers by the tombstones of our loved ones. We must never forget their love of God and family, and their devotion to our country.

“Forgetting” should be considered a sin in our lives.

Every Memorial Day I love to honor my “Uncle Dick” Boehme who gave his life for our country.

He is the Bravest Boehme.
