We Are Fighting Atheists, Not Leftists

This week the U.S. military shot down a Chinese spy balloon after it traversed the USA. Then President Biden delivered his “State of the Union” address to the American nation.

What do China and President Biden share in common (other than influence peddling)? They are both leftists, operating out of an atheistic world view. They are both working against liberty and revival in our nation and worldwide.

We must define our enemies in order to understand how to beat them.

We are fighting atheists in America and the West.

We Are Fighting Atheists, Not Leftists

I have said for years that using the term “leftists” to describe those trying to destroy faith-based America and Western Civilization does not help us win the culture war.

When you hear the word “leftist,” what images does it conjure up? To me, nothing. It’s like describing a turn signal or side of the brain. The term “leftist” does not tell you who you are fighting and why.

The cultural battles of the 21st century are between worldviews, not body parts. And they are not little skirmishes over pastel points of policy. We are dealing with white verses black, light versus darkness.

Atheists, by way of their comprehensive ideology, are trying to destroy every vestige of Judeo-Christian faith and principle throughout the Western World. If they succeed in this culture war, either a new “Dark Ages” will descend, or we will experience a global totalitarian reign like the world has never seen.

Dr. Francis Schaeffer warned us about this “all of nothing” battle a generation ago. Here are his  prophetic words written in 1982 in Christian Manifesto:

The basic problem of the Christians in this country (USA) in the last eighty years or so, in regard to society and in regard to government, is that they have seen things in bits and pieces instead of totals.

They have very gradually become disturbed over permissiveness, pornography, the public schools, the breakdown of the family, and finally abortion. But they have not seen this as a totality–each thing being a part, a symptom, of a much bigger problem.

They have failed to see that all this has come about because of a shift in worldview…away from a worldview that was at least vaguely Christian in people’s memory (even if they were not individually Christian) toward something completely different–toward a worldview based upon the idea that the final reality is impersonal matter or energy shaped into its present form by impersonal chance.

Christianity is not just a series of truths, but Truth–truth about all of reality…The Lordship of Christ covers all of life and all of life equally. In this sense there is nothing concerning reality that is not spiritual…When I say that Christianity is true I mean it is true to total reality–not just a series of truths, but Truth–Truth about all of reality.

There is no way to mix these total worldviews.

Marxist or non-Marxist (atheists)  do not know the truth of final reality, God, and they do not know who Man is. Their concept of Man is what Man is not, just as their concept of the final reality is what final reality is not.

Since their concept of of Man is mistaken, their concept of society and of law is mistaken, and they have no sufficient basis for either society or law.”

For one thousand years in Europe and two hundred in America, the Western nations placed the Truth about God and human beings at the forefront of cultural life–though imperfectly.

As Indian thinker Vishal Mangalwadi points out in The Book That Made Your World: How The Bible Created the Soul of Western Civilization, the West applied the teachings of the Bible and salvation in Jesus Christ to many areas of life which brought liberty and blessing to  a large portion of the globe:

The Bible created the modern world of science and learning  because it gave us the Creator’s vision of what reality is all about. This is what made the West a reading and thinking civilization.

Mangalwadi laments that India, though possessing as many brilliant people as the Western world, sat steeped in darkness and poverty for millenniums because their religion’s quest was to “kill” their minds instead of using them for the glory of God. “What we lacked was the biblical worldview” he admits which creates thinking, hope, initiative, invention, literature, the arts, compassion for others, valuing life, technology, universities, and all the blessings of knowing and serving God.

These things only sprouted in India when Christian missionaries, educators, and linguists brought biblical faith to the sub-continent. They are now dying in the West because atheists, who once enjoyed the fruits of truth and liberty, are now systematically destroying them.

Ultimately, life come down to truth or lies, freedom or tyranny, God or self, Jesus or Satan. As atheists in America tear apart the biblical fabric, open Satanism is on the rise.

Gary Randall reports in “The Devil Goes Down to New Mexico” how the Satanic Temple pushes self as God and abortion as a blood sacrifice. He says this is what “evil” looks like:

The Satanic Abortion Ritual is a destruction ritual that serves as a protective rite. Its purpose is to cast off notions of guilt, shame, and mental discomfort that a patient may be experiencing due to choosing to have a legal and medically safe abortion.

To begin the ritual, the woman looks at herself in a mirror right before the abortion procedure, reminding herself of her “personhood and [her] responsibility to [her]self.” She then recites…”One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.”

When she is ready for the abortion procedure, the woman recites the fifth tenant, which says, “One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one’s beliefs.”

Once the abortion is complete, the woman recites the “personal affirmation,” which is, “By my body, my blood. By my will, it is done.” The Temple says the abortion ritual helps one “feel doubts dissipating and your confidence growing as you have just undertaken a decision that affirms your autonomy and free will.”

Note the emphasis on “self” in this abortion ritual–not God and the love of life. Transgender ideology shares the same focus. It is not God who made me male or female. I will choose my gender and destiny.

No wonder the book Proverbs describes the world starkly as a battle between the wise and the foolish, the godly and the ungodly, the righteous and the unrighteous. Those opposites are as clear as day this century.

Will we allow radical atheists to destroy our righteous foundations?

One generation prior to Dr. Schaeffer, futurist George Orwell predicted what atheism would do to Western Civilization in Notes on the Way, 1940:

For two hundred years we had sawed and sawed and sawed at the branch we were sitting on. And in the end, much more suddenly than anyone had foreseen, our efforts were rewarded, and down we came. But unfortunately there had been a little mistake: The thing at the bottom was not a bed of roses after all; it was a cesspool full of barbed wire…It appears that the amputation of the soul isn’t just a simple surgical job like having your appendix out. The wound has a tendency to go septic.

And here we sit on the nearly-severed branch.

It’s time to pray, vote, and righteously prevail over the atheists for the glory of God.

Since the “god of this world” has blinded the minds of those who do not believe, I think the effort will need to be two-pronged. We will need to engage atheists philosophically, and we should win that discussion, since we are starting with true presuppositions. The more difficult part, I think, will be the spiritual warfare that will be necessary to break the blindfold off of the unblievers’ minds so they can even understand what we have to say. Both of these efforts, of course, should be to the end that they might be saved, not just so we win an argument, or even a spiritual battle.

You are exactly right, Mike, and conversion is the key to a transformed (humble and open) mind. I believe next week I may share some ideas on going on both “offense” and “defense” in the culture war which is really the duty of the Church. The key to that is revival.

Thanks for your faithfulness over the years.

Amen. Just finished a National Prayer Breakfast that honored Jesus. The liberal media painted it falsely as a schism between the Fellowship and
Congress—not so. It was a planned change that
Doug Coe desired for years. The media pounced
on it and misrepresented it as a break that never existed.
