Praying for The Midterms
I never thought much about midterm elections. They were the “B” game after the “A” game of presidential years. Choosing a president was important–directing the entire ship of state for four years. But the measly midterms? I always voted in them, but many of my friends didn’t bother.
For decades, the midterm elections made little impact because America operated out of a Judeo-Christian worldview. The Democrats championed the working classes and the poor, and Republicans supported business and the military. But both parties believed in God and generally anchored their platforms in the Ten Commandments and Golden Rule.
No longer.
Two worldviews are vying for cultural supremacy in the USA and Western World: biblical freedom and totalitarianism. The 2026 midterms will swing the pendulum one way or the other.
We need to increase our prayers for the midterm elections.
Praying for The Midterms
Because of a good cast of national leaders and a hard-working current administration, the United States is experiencing some aspects of governmental/social renewal.
- The border has been sealed, 600,000 illegal alien criminals have been sent back to their own countries, and over two million people who entered the U.S. illegally have self deported. Safe border, safer streets.
- Violent crime has plunged to historic lows in our country. Thank you ICE and local police.
- Fraud and waste are being exposed and prosecuted. Con artists are going to jail.
- The Big Beautiful Bill brought an average $3400 tax refund this year–up 11% from last year.
- Inflation is low (3%) despite increased gas prices due to the Iran conflict.
- Trillions of new dollars are being invested in U.S. factories, AI development, and space exploration.
- The Trump administration is “re-ordering the world” by becoming the leading producer of oil & natural gas, curtailing OPEC petroleum domination, holding China in check, and helping Ukraine defeat Russia. We hope for complete liberation of Iran and transformation of the Middle East from “chaos to commerce.”
- We’ve enjoyed a number of spiritual renewal events this year, celebrated our 250th birthday as a country, and hosted the most successful FIFA World Cup in history.
America is back–though there are always brighter horizons to meet our lofty standards (Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution).
As we approach the vital 2026 midterm elections, I see three potential menaces that could retard or halt a growing American renewal. These entities (fueled by demonically-inspired voices), are hell-bent on stopping any revival of godly principles in the USA and the world. Why? They hate Jesus, are deceived by their false ideologies, and are committed to stopping God’s Kingdom advance in the 21st century.
A “menace” is defined as:
“A person, thing, or situation that causes trouble, harm, or danger. It can mean a serious threat to safety or an extremely annoying pest who disrupts others. As a verb, it means to threaten or express an intention to do harm.”
Here are three menaces we must pray against in the lead-up to the 2026 midterms.
Dishonest Media
Possibly 80% of USA media (radio, television, and Internet) are strongly biased toward ascending totalitarianism in our country. They refuse to present both sides of political debate, fail to report important stories which contradict their narrative, and out-and-out lie about people and policies with whom they disagree.
Fake news is a blatant reality today. Fortunately, much of the “legacy media” is dying and new media forms are taking their place with varying points of view. Free speech is a good thing. But not to those who are anti-God. They want to force their opinions on people. Fair-minded folks want to persuade people to love and embrace the truth and the blessings it brings to their societies.
Pray for truth and discernment on the airwaves.
Red-Green Alliance
Two different totalitarian philosophies are being pushed by secular media: Marxist politicians/ideas and Islamic candidates sympathetic to Sharia law.
Kelsey Reinhardt explains in The Unholy Alliance You Weren’t Supposed to Notice:
Scholars and analysts call it “the red-green alliance:” a working coalition between the radical secular left and Islamist political movements. It is not a formal organization. It has no single headquarters. But it is real, it is growing, and its ambitions are not modest.
To understand it, you have to understand what holds it together, because on the surface, it makes no sense at all.
The radical Left champions women’s autonomy, sexual liberation, and secular governance. Islamist political theology holds to the authority of Sharia, traditional gender roles, and the supremacy of religious law. These are not minor differences. They are irreconcilable visions of human life and social order.
And yet they march together. They fundraise together. They are reshaping Democratic primaries together.
What binds them is not a shared vision of the future. It is a shared enemy: the Judeo-Christian foundations of Western civilization, our natural law tradition, our ordered liberty and our understanding of the human person as made in the image of God and therefore possessed of an inherent dignity that no state can confer or revoke.
Both movements, in their activist forms, are united by what they oppose. And that opposition has proven sufficient to make them allies.
The main vehicles of this Red-Green Alliance are the Democratic Party and compliant media. We must expose their destructive claims and beat them at the polls.
Pray that this evil alliance will be exposed and self-destruct.
Unengaged Church
The people of God–the Church of Jesus Christ–are the “salt and light” of the world. As goes the Church, so goes the culture. Unfortunately, half of Jesus’ followers don’t go to the polls. Many 21st century churches are “seeker-oriented,” fear speaking out on many issues, and avoid politics (including voting).
I know a large, fast-growing church which has doubled in size the past three years. It is now the largest church in its town and doing a superb job of pointing people to Jesus.
But they are totally disengaged from encouraging cultural renewal. They fear alienating people by teaching biblical truth. Though “on fire” for Jesus, many of them won’t even vote on November 3.
If that happens across our nation, the forces of evil may very well prevail.
Pray for full-blown revival among the people of God.
For the next 70 days, we must pray passionately for the midterms. I believe the future of the Free World is at risk every election this decade.
Let’s be faithful and pray.
Kelsey Reinhardt once again reminds us (originally published in Catholic Vote):
The church has never promised that history moves only forward. It has always been known that civilizations can be lost. Pope Benedict XVI warned the West about building public life “as if God does not exist.” When reason is severed from faith, and when faith is expelled from the public square, what remains is not neutral secularism. It is a vacuum. And vacuums are filled.
The cut flowers of Western culture can look beautiful for a long time after they have been severed from their roots. But they do not last.
And our answer is also prayer–prayer for conversion and renewal by rebuilding of a culture that remembers what it owes to the tradition that formed it. That work begins in families. In parishes. In the daily choices of ordinary [believers] who refuse to let their children grow up as cut flowers.
The civilization being contested is not ours to own. It is ours to pass on.
